Questions on Your Treatment

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Each pulse of the laser sends light energy into your skin. We use different wavelengths of laser light to treat different colours of ink in your tattoo. As the light energy is directed into your skin, it is selectively absorbed by the tattoo ink particles trapped in the dermis of your skin. When the ink particles absorb this energy, they instantly shatter into tiny fragments. Once the laser has broken the ink into smaller pieces, your body’s immune system works to remove the ink over the following weeks, flushing it away from the tattooed area. We see the result of this as the tattoo lightening in appearance. Each additional laser treatment breaks down more and more ink until the tattoo can no longer be seen.

How do I prepare for my laser tattoo removal treatment?

We recommend that you avoid excessive sun exposure in the few days before the treatment starts.

Post treatment
After the treatment the tattoo may turn white or red in colour. The tattoo will then be protected with a suitable covering. The area may feel tender and the skin sore, regular analgesia may be taken. You will be given an after care advice sheet to take home.

How Long Will It Take to Remove My Tattoo
The average time to remove a tattoo  is 4-8 treatments. Treatments are best spaced at of 4-6 week intervals. However this does vary for each client and their tattoo, as different factors such as ink type and colour, skin type, and age and location of the tattoo play a role. At your laser tattoo consultation, your practitioner will be able to give you a better indication of how many treatments you personally need and answer any other questions you may have about laser tattoo removal.

Does it hurt ?

Laser tattoo removal involves some level of discomfort; however we  use ice  on the skin before, during, and after treatments. This soothes the skin and makes the treatment much more bearable. We also apply a soothing gel to the treated area after the treatment.

Can you help me revise this tattoo?

Yes, we can provide support to patients looking for tattoo revision rather than completely removing the whole tattoo.

What aftercare will I need?

For the week after the treatment session, you should:

  • wash and dry the treated area gently using a mild soap, then apply a soothing moisturiser
  • protect your skin with high factor sunscreen
  • avoid excessive UV exposure
  • avoid strenuous exercise

Post-Treatment Care
The area must be protected with application of gauze for the first 24 hours, and then protected from sun exposure to prevent changes in pigmentation between treatments.

Side Effects
For most people, any side effects from laser tattoo removal are short-lived, minimal and to be expected. Some of those possible are: darkening of the skin due to inflammation, the area may itch, or feel like a minor sunburn that hurts if chafed. If you have a history of scarring easily, poor wound healing, or suffer an immune problem you should discuss this at your initial consultation. There is a low risk for developing scars if you have these issues. A not common, but possible side effect for those with darker skin is the lightening of the skin due to the loss of melanin (a substance that gives the skin it’s colour).
