How it works
The bacteria that causes acne (Scientifically known as P. acnes) lives deep in the pores, which means it can be difficult to reach with an every day face wash. So, Obagi created the CLENZIderm M.D. System, which contains benzoyl peroxide. This ingredient works to penetrate the deepest pores in your skin, but is still gentle on the surface.

Clinical studies have shown that the Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. for normal to oily skin system significantly reduces follicular P. acnes bacteria compared to a leading BPO combination. WEEKS 2-4
The CLENZIderm M.D ingredients work to eliminate bacteria at the source, meaning your skin will begin to heal and blemishes reduce in redness and size. WEEKS 5-7
After 1 month, breakouts will be less frequent due to the gentle exfoliating, antibacterial and oil-regulating effects of the system. A Three-step system to clearer Skins
The three products of Obagi’s CLENZIderm M.D. system are specially formulated to work together to provide better pore penetration, quick reduction in acne-causing bacteria and visible acne reduction in as little as 2 weeks. These three products and their mechanisms of action are described:
1. Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Daily Care Foaming Cleanser (4 fl. oz.)
This product, as well as Obagi Pore Therapy, contain 2% salicylic acid. This oil soluble compound penetrates deep into your pores, gently washing away and removing dead skin cells, as well as restoring the skin’s natural oils. Targeting blackheads and whiteheads as well as acne, the cleanser also contains soothing menthol that cools and calms any skin irritation. Overall your skin will be left feeling cleaner, clearer and healthier. This product is designed to be applied first in the triple mechanistic system that is Obagi Clenziderm M.D. To apply, dispenses a 20p sized amount and massage into the face using warm water before rinsing and patting dry. After 10 to 15 minutes, you can apply the next product in the system.
2. Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Pore Therapy (5 fl. oz.)
Working with a similar mechanism of action to the Daily Foaming Cleanser, this therapy cleans deep within the pores to clear skin with the aid of salicylic acid. By unclogging the pores and cleaning away dead skin cells, this product not only builds upon the cleansing action of the cleanser, it also prepares the skin so it is ready to deeply absorb the liquid serum of the third product in the system that targets acne at its source. As the second product in the Obagi CLENZIderm system, application should occur after the use of the cleanser. Saturate a cotton ball or pad and then cover the acne affected area of your face 1 to 3 times a day. Always start with one daily application to ensure your facial skin does not become dry.
3. Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Therapeutic Lotion (1.6 fl. oz.)
This product is specially formulated with 5% benzoyl peroxide, which works its way deep down into the follicles beneath the skin where acne begins. The Therapeutic Lotion quickly clears acne and prevents new breakouts from occurring. Solubilized 5% benzoyl peroxide significantly reduces acne-causing bacteria such as P. acnes, leaving your skin purified and clear. This clever product also works to reduce future acne breakouts as well as tackling immediate blemishes. Benzoyl peroxide works by drying the conditions in which acne causing bacteria thrive. Due to this mechanism of action, it is best to begin with only one application (that covers the entire affected area of the face) daily and then increase frequency up to 3 times daily if needed. It is also recommended to wash hands after use as this product can bleach fabrics. Finally, ensure sunscreen is worn after applying this product if your skin will be exposed to the sun.
